Washington D.C. Favorites

We were in Washington, D.C. recently to celebrate Tag der Deutschen Einheit at the residence of the new German Ambassador with 2,000 of his closest friends. Seriously.

Much has changed in just over two decades (21 years, to be exact), and that is a testament to the strength of the German people and their capacity for great change. (For an interesting take on that part of history, check out the film Good Bye Lenin! Then, for a more depressing angle watch The Lives of Others.) It was a fantastic party complete with unpasturized beer — as it should be, sparkling Riesling, and lots of delicious food featuring traditional favorites from around the country such as herring, Wursts, Rinderbraten, Spaetzle and more. The Juicy Egg

We were at the Harvest Festival at nearby Wishing Star Farm this past weekend, and my sister Emily bought me what could be my favorite treat: farm fresh eggs. Nothing compares to eggs just laid.

So, what do I do with an 18 pack of farm fresh eggs? Oh — lots of things, but one of the purest ways to enjoy such a simple delicacy is to cook them “juicy.” A term from my childhood, and probably from my mom’s too. I think, technically, they are “over-easy” to everyone else. This is the way my mom, and my Grandma and Grandpa Salazar have always eaten their eggs, and continue to do so.  Continue reading

Bear Creek Community Gardens — Food that Grows

Look around, and everything is ripe for the picking. It is harvest season: my daughter’s class has been studying seeds, and how things grow. This has led to some food adventures — cooking beets, squash, and carrots in class whereupon we parents arrive to pick up our children and find them, forks in hand, attacking a plate loaded with root vegetables and summer squash. It may not surprise you, but this brings me great satisfaction at seeing so many young mouths clamouring for fresh, home-grown veggies.     Continue reading
