Pullet Eggs

Has everyone but me heard of pullet eggs? If you, like me, did not grow up on a farm (though my childhood was far from urban), you may not know this term. It refers to the eggs laid by chickens under the age of one year. Recently while we were visiting my grandparents, I walked into the chaos of breakfast time in the kitchen and gravitated to a carton of these beautiful little eggs that are roughly the size of…of…hmmm…they are like half the size of a large egg, if that. I demanded to know WHAT these were, and my Aunt Polly informed me of their proper name and that she had bought them at a local farmer’s market. Before anyone could crack another, fry it, and eat it… I had found a basket in my grandmother’s cupboard, filled it with the remaining eggs, and ran outside like a woman posessed to capture these before they were no more. No less than several eyebrows were raised at my sudden enthusiasm…

But you do what you have to do to be inspired sometimes…even if you are misunderstood. The real tragedy though, was that by the time I got my children their food, found myself a plate of my dad’s hearty pancakes and fried ham, each and every pullet egg had been consumed! So, anyone out there happen to know if there’s a difference in flavour at all? Still curious.

Heirloom Tomato and Arugula Pizza

Happiness is chopping bitter chocolate, pouring obscene amounts of heavy cream, cracking dozens of eggs, fighting a diluge of tears while slicing shallot after shallot, searing a good flank steak… and oh, don’t get me started. Okay, happiness is also slicing fresh heirloom tomatoes.

No, I do not have heirloom tomatoes growing in my backyard, so there really isn’t a need to become jealous. I did, at one point in my life, but it was at a lower altitude, and with fewer children. I just picked these up from the store, being careful this time not to buy 5 pounds and then choking because I just paid $20 for tomatoes ON SALE. Been there, done that. Instead, I bought just two beautiful tomatoes and vowed to relish them. Because we love a good rustic pizza nearly every week, this is what I did… Continue reading

Lavender Meyer Lemon Curd

When I heard of my sister Emily’s plans to come to Colorado, we set a date for a tea party immediately! You have to know Emily to understand, but although the rest of us really enjoy a good tea party, Emily fully savours the experience like no one else, and I just know she is secretly wishing she were in a corset and a fine gown with a lovely hat, arriving by horse and carriage. She has an addiction to all things Jane Austin, with a particular love for Pride and Prejudice and every female in this family has definitely spent a solid six hours with Emily watching the entire BBC version of the movie (Colin Firth) while drinking copious amounts of tea. Okay, not that any of us are complaining…we might have our own English fantasies too. So, you will understand when I say we have a long history of tea parties, dating back to our childhood years before we had ever picked up Jane Austin and entered her world. Before we had ever experienced tea  as it is in England. Which is why it was so very easy to decide to have tea, and include dear friends and family.

As it happened, I had stumbled across a few Meyer lemons the week before and snatched them into my shopping cart, wondering if I shouldn’t just grab the whole pile of them and run for the door. Since we don’t live in California, we tend to see these beauties only in the winter and I was feeling greedy. I came home, not knowing what I would do with them. Then it hit me- I was planning to make lemon curd, of course, for the tea party, and how much more wonderful would it be if it was made with Meyer lemons? And because I have a lavender obsession (you will find), and because, amazingly, the lavender is still budding and blooming in our garden in September, I knew I would have to add that too. Don’t we all know that purple and yellow are complimentary colors- how much better when you get to EAT them together?
