Grandma Dickerson’s Zucchini Bread

Anyone have a few zucchinis on hand? Look around, and they are piled high at the farmer’s markets or being gifted with love from backyard gardens. Last night I received a text from my sweet friend Dawn that said: “front porch alert!” I dropped everything and ran to swing open the door to find a nice brown paper sack sitting on the step filled with the latest bounty from Grant Family Farms. Dawn has a crop-share that just keeps giving, and she is incredibly generous with her extras. Included were two lovely little zucchini with such tender skin, they appeared to be picked only hours before.  Continue reading

Telly’s Seafood Paella

Highlands neighborhood. Denver, Colorado. Just another kiddie birthday party in good ol’ middle America: a warm summer evening, kids splashing in the wading pool in the backyard, soccer ball being kicked around, music, and a 3 foot diameter “paella” (pan for which the dish is named) heating over a high flame. This is how our friends Telly and Nicole celebrate another year for their little man Zannis.

Making paella in huge quantities is not a new trick for Telly. Co-owner (with his brother) of Jake and Telly’s Greek Taverna in Colorado Springs, and creator and previous owner of Parea Wine Bar in San Francisco, it’s safe to say he knows a thing or two about good food and wine. Jake and Telly’s does a wine dinner featuring wines and food from a selected country or region of the world each month, and so Telly began making paella 2 years ago as part of his Wines of Spain dinner, cooking out in the dining room for all his patrons to see.          Continue reading

Red Plum & Peach Tart

This past weekend we got the annual phone call! My mom: to report that the plums growing in her garden were ready to be picked, and she advised me to do it soon because the birds and raccoons were already after them. I told her we would come the following day.
